What Cause Hair Loss in Men and Women

While the exact causes of hair loss are still unknown, many of these causes are temporary and a few are permanent. These are some of the more common reason for hair loss. The most common cause of hair loss is androgenetic hair loss, which usually strikes older men. This type of baldness runs in families, and does not effect children. You may ask yourself, if this is the most common cause of hair loss, why is my kid losing hair?

Male pattern Baldness (Androgenetic Alopecia)

Typically a male who experiences noticeable hair loss at an early age will tend to progress to more extensive hair loss as they grow older. About 95% of all cases of hair loss is due to what is termed Androgenetic Alopecia (commonly referred to as male pattern baldness as it occurs much more frequently in men than in women, although women can be affected by this trait also).

Stress and Hair Loss

Like with diet, hair loss is more than likely not the sole result of stress, but stress can certainly play a part - and like dietary deficiencies, stress-induced hair loss is reversible.

Diet and Hair Loss

People often unwittingly mistreat their hair when they decide to lose weight quickly through fad diet that is high in fiber and bulk, but low in protein. Of course, over the course of a few months they will lose a lot of weight, not to mention a good deal of their hair.

The three main causes of hair loss are linked to genes, hormones and age. This is true for both women and men.  Regardless of an immediate family history of baldness, some people may experience hair loss. While there are many types of hair loss, the most common is Male Pattern Baldness. The scientific language for this condition is Androgenetic alopecia .

In fact, there is a third factor, which is the passage of time, or aging. In other words, in order for androgenetic alopecia to occur, there must be:

  • a genetic propensity for balding
  • the presence of androgens, or male hormones
  • enough aging time to allow the first two factors to exert their influence on the hair follicles Genetics

Other causes of non-genetic hair loss include, but are not limited are thyroid or liver disease, protein deficiency (common with vegetarian diets), hepatic or renal failure, anorexia or bulimia, anesthesia, too much vitamin A, childbirth local viral, fungal, or protozoan infection, starting or stopping birth control pills drug toxicity, very high fever, antimitotics - such as those used for chemotherapy, severe stress, bromocriptine - used to inhibit lactation, anemia (sometimes seen in runners), beta blockers, hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism ACE inhibitors, essential fatty acid deficiency, amphetamines, zinc deficiency, anticholesterol agents, any condition that upsets, the ovarian, adrenal, or pituitary axis systemic disease such as lupus/DLE, etc
